Don’t Run a Business Without Data Backup

The concept of backups isn’t new. A lot of people have a spare key, and the idea of a spare tire is pretty universally known. While either example could easily make or break someone’s day, the stakes are exponentially higher when business data is involved.

This is why a comprehensive business continuity plan—including a disaster recovery strategy, complete with backup readiness—is essential.

Let’s explore the key best practice that is the 3-2-1-1 backup rule to ensure you’re ready to deal with any IT issues or hurdles as they come up.

What is the 3-2-1-1 Rule?

The 3-2-1-1 Rule is widely considered the standard for data protection that all businesses should treat as the minimum. It effectively lays out what a business should do:

  • Maintain at least 3 copies of all data—one that you actively use in your operations, and at least two to serve as backup copies.
  • Keeping these backups on at least 2 different storage types: network-attached storage locally, and a cloud data center.
  • Preserving at least 1 copy offsite, which is where the cloud is especially helpful, because it protects your data from any disaster that physically damages your technology.
  • Saving 1 copy as an immutable backup, meaning it cannot be changed or deleted for a set amount of time.

This is Something That Needs to Be Done Ahead of Time

It is critical that you proactively prepare your backups. After all, let’s say your business experiences a major hardware failure when a key server suddenly fails. If you don’t have a backup in place beforehand, that data’s already gone. Fortunately, you don’t have to handle these preparations alone.

Modern threats and other business complications that lead to data loss are becoming increasingly complex as time goes by, especially as threat actors now have access to advanced technologies like AI to make their threats more potent. This added complexity only makes it more challenging to manage the proper protections, never mind while also running your business’ actual operations.
